Wordpress website cost to clients

Ok, so Matt, the founder of WP says that the average cost of a WP site is about $2k. Is it reasonable to charge a client about $500 and up to set up a WP site which could cost the person who set it up less than $50 (not including the hours spent for the setup) or is it a RIP OFF to the client?

@Paul - If it takes you 3 full days of work at 8 hours a day to setup a new site for a client. That's 8 hours * 3 days = 24 hours per site setup.

So, if you are billing the a flat rate of client $500 per site setup. You have an effective hourly rate of $500 / 24 hours = $20.84/hr

So figure out what you want your hourly rate to be and work backwards.

If you are just starting out you can keep this as your rate and as you add to your portfolio raise your rates once (or maybe twice) a year you reach your desired rate.

$500 for a website of any kind is a extremely fair price. I would worry more about ripping yourself off than anything else.

I read you said something about "it costs the person about $50 to set it up" and I'm assuming you mean the marketers who sell web services as a package, but they aren't really web designers or developers. The people who listen to your business concerns, nod their head in understanding, and then go buy a theme from ThemeForest. No, I'm not down with those sorts of people, because they don't truly address the individual problems. But, they give their clients peace of mind, which is what you should strive to do as well.

How many hours does it take you to perform the work?

I'd say 8 hours a day for 3 days for a complete WP site, which includes branding, content (text, images, videos), and testing.

Is there any formula to calculate the cost of this kind of work ?

Is it more expensive because the use of databases ? (MySQL)

What is the cost if you build a website with HTML5 & CSS3 only ??

Sounds like you might want to work out some flat rates for completed sites and also hourly charges.

What is your time worth. We all have to pay bills and the electricity that runs our machines :)

If you are starting out like myself $500 is the minimum for me for a five page site(possible more) for friends and small startups. Thats about $100 a page. That is not a rip off. You have valuable skills whether your using WP or just HTML and CSS.

Dont undersell yourself and work towards raising that cost :)

My two cents.

Thank you for all your responses. How about this? Let's say you've got 10 clients and you have a hosting plan of $15 a month.. Is it ok to charge your 10 clients $5-15/month for hosting for the sites you created for them using one hosting account of yours which costs you $15/month? This means you're paying $15/month for hosting and getting paid up to $150/month for hosting your clients' sites.

You can charge whatever you want for hosting. Just make sure your clients are clear on what's included. Keep in mind if their site goes down, they are going to call you and expect you to fix the problem even if the problem is beyond your control.

You might want to review your hosting provider's terms of service agreement for your hosting package or ask them directly if the hosting package you currently have allows you to host other people's sites and charge them for it. You're reselling hosting and some providers may require that you specifically subscribe to a reseller hosting package in order to this. It never hurts to ask. Better to ask than to get in trouble for violating the terms of your hosting agreement and then your account and your clients' sites get shut down.
