"Work" page not showing posts

I am on the video "Displaying Custom Posts and Fields in a Template". When I add the php to my work.php file and try to display the work posts that I have entered, they do not show. Instead, the blog posts show. Here is my code:

<?php

/*
    Template Name: Work Page
*/

get_header(); ?>

    <p>This is the work.php file</p>

    <?php

        $args = array(
            'post_type' => 'work'
        );

        $the_query = new WP_Query('$args');
    ?>

    <?php if (have_posts() ) : while ($the_query->have_posts() ) : $the_query->the_post(); ?>

        <h3><?php the_title(); ?></h3>
        <?php the_content(); ?>
        <hr>

    <?php endwhile; else: ?>

        <p>There are no posts</p>

    <?php endif; ?>

<?php get_footer(); ?>

I belive you may need to add <?php get_template_part( 'content', 'work' ); ?>

I viewed the tutorial again and started that part from scratch. It works now, so I must have had a typo. Thank you for your help!
