Chapman, author of "Amazing Things Will Happen." 0:05 I've been around the world and have spoken at many events, both large and small. 0:09 As cool as it is to say that you've been to this event or to that location 0:13 the real value of events comes down to the connections you make 0:17 because, whether they're personal or professional, they truly can last a lifetime. 0:21 So here are a few of my tips on how to do your own networking. 0:25 First off, you've got to make a positive first impression. 0:29 You don't have to show up dressed to the nines and look like you're trying too hard. 0:32 At the same time, don't show up to an event looking like a slob because nobody will want to talk to you. 0:36 The dress code can vary depending on the event but, for the most part, you could do a lot worse than something business casual. 0:42 At the same time, if you have a creative side or a fashionable flair you can use that to make an impression as well. 0:48 Secondly, you've got to make an effort. You have to get out there. 0:54 Walk right up to the people and say hello, and this can be tough if you have a shy personality 0:58 or if you think someone won't talk to you because, you know, they're some kind of web celebrity or something. 1:02 You have to remember they are just people, too. Many speakers and attendees love to meet people and network. 1:07 By you stepping forward it actually saves them the trouble of having to find someone. 1:13 So introduce yourself. Shake their hand and start a conversation. 1:18 Lastly, leave them wanting more. 1:22 Whoever you meet, make sure they know where to find you, whether it's on the social network or on your blog, 1:24 and help them out by sharing a business card or an easy to remember URL or handle. 1:29 Business cards can be another way to use your creative side to make a lasting impression. 1:34 So remember, make an effort to dress well, approach people, and make it easy for them to connect with you 1:38 and you'll find with each event you attend networking becomes easier and more successful. 1:44
