Have you ever wanted to learn the basics of the Type Tool in Adobe Illustrator CS6? If so, you have come to the right place. In this Quick Tip, we will use the Type tool and learn how to: select other fonts, alter the size of the text, add a stroke color, and change case (Uppercase, Lowercase, Title Case, Sentence Case). Also we will convert the text to an object with the Create Outlines feature.

Sign up[Treehouse presents] 0:00 [Quick Tips][Using the Type Tool and Creating Outlines in Adobe Illustrator][with Mat Helme] 0:02 Hey, what's up—Mat Helme here with a Treehouse Quick Tip: 0:05 Using the Text Tool and creating outlines in Adobe Illustrator CS6. 0:08 After opening up Adobe Illustrator CS6, 0:13 let's head over to the Tools Panel and grab the Type Tool. 0:16 Then, type in any word; I'm going to use the word "gnarly." 0:21 Grab the Selection Tool and double-click on it, highlighting the word. 0:25 Now, you'll notice our Control Panel has now changed. 0:31 It's now displaying all of the properties for the Type Tool: 0:33 color, stroke, opacity, character of font, font style, size, alignment, 0:36 and various other settings such as xy coordinates and the width and height of the text. 0:42 Now, with the type selected, 0:47 let's go ahead and change the color by using the drop-down on the Control Panel to—say—orange, 0:49 and let's give it a stroke of a dark red. 0:54 Let's bump that stroke up to—say—4 points, keep it uniform, keep the opacity at 100%, 1:01 and let's change the font to Arial Black, and its font weight we'll leave at regular. 1:09 For font size, let's bump it up to 72 points. 1:19 Now, say if you want to capitalize this word, 1:21 you can simply do this by selecting the word, going to Type, Change Case, select "UPPERCASE." 1:24 Now—as you can see—you can also select Lowercase, Title Case, or Sentence Case; 1:33 let's select "UPPERCASE." 1:38 Perfect! 1:40 Now, let's head back up to the Control Panel with our word selected and change the character to Highlands Regular. 1:43 Now, Highlands Regular is not a default font. 1:53 Now, say if we send this font to a friend, and then they don't have this particular font, 1:57 they won't be able to see what it actually looks like. 2:00 Now, if we create this word and turn it into a shape or an object, 2:02 we can do that by right clicking it and selecting "Create Outlines." 2:07 You can also do this by going to "Type" and "Create Outlines," 2:13 or by using a shortcut, Shift + Command + O. 2:18 And that is how we use the Type Tool in Adobe Illustrator CS6. 2:23 For more in-depth tutorials and projects using Adobe Illustrator CS6, 2:28 head over to Treehouse and treat yourself to a gold membership—you deserve it! 2:32
